Buy the mount, not just the tube

A steady mount is the difference between a telescope you use weekly and one you resent. When comparing two telescopes at similar prices, the one with the heavier, better-engineered mount is usually the better buy even if its aperture is smaller.

Alt-azimuth vs equatorial: pick honestly

Alt-azimuth mounts move up-down and left-right, which is how humans think. Equatorial mounts move along the sky's own axes, which tracks objects far better once aligned but is genuinely confusing at first. If nobody will be there to help you set it up, alt-azimuth is the kinder choice.

Your first three targets should be the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn

They are bright, easy to find, and immediately rewarding. Attempting a faint galaxy on night one from a city sky is the fastest route to concluding the telescope is broken when it is working perfectly.

Give a reflector time to cool

A reflector brought outside from an air-conditioned room has warm air currents moving inside the tube, which blurs everything. Twenty to thirty minutes outside before you start makes a visible difference, and it costs nothing.

What aperture should a beginner telescope have?
100mm to 130mm is the practical beginner range. Below about 90mm you are limited to the Moon, planets and the brightest clusters. Above 150mm, telescopes get heavy and bulky enough that a beginner may find them a chore to move, which reduces how often they get used.
Should a beginner buy a refractor or a reflector?
Buy a refractor if you want zero maintenance and mainly observe the Moon and planets. Buy a reflector if you want the most aperture your money can buy and you do not mind learning collimation, which takes about ten minutes to learn. Neither is objectively better — they optimise for different things.
Is a GoTo telescope better for beginners?
It depends entirely on your sky. From a light-polluted city, GoTo genuinely helps because the star patterns you would navigate by are not visible. From a darker site, the money is usually better spent on aperture, and learning to star-hop makes you a substantially better observer.
What will I actually see on my first night?
With any telescope here: lunar craters in sharp relief, Jupiter as a small disc with two cloud belts and four moons in a line, and Saturn with its rings clearly separated from the planet.
