Planets are bright and small. That combination changes what makes a good telescope: you are not starved of light, so you are not desperate for aperture. What you need is high magnification delivered cleanly, and a mount that does not shake when you touch the focuser.

Long focal ratios — f/8 and slower — help twice over. They deliver higher magnification with any given eyepiece, and they are more forgiving of optical imperfection at the high powers planetary work demands. This is why a modest, slow refractor can outperform a fast, larger reflector on Jupiter.

The honest limit is the atmosphere. On most Indian nights, turbulent air caps useful magnification somewhere between 150x and 200x regardless of what you spent. The telescope that wins on planets is the one you can leave outside to reach ambient temperature and then use without vibration.

The trade-off: the sky limits you more than the telescope

Planetary observing is gated by atmospheric seeing. The same telescope that shows the Cassini Division cleanly on a still night shows a boiling yellow blob on a turbulent one, and no purchase changes that. Expect a handful of genuinely excellent nights a year, and judge any telescope on those rather than on an average evening.
