GoTo Telescopes — Computerised Pointing for Light-Polluted Skies

A GoTo telescope has motors and a database. You align it on two or three bright stars, then ask for M13 and the mount slews there and tracks it as the Earth turns.

The usual pitch is convenience. The stronger argument, in India specifically, is light pollution. Star-hopping — the manual technique of finding faint objects by working outward from bright ones — needs those intermediate guide stars to be visible. From a Tier-1 city sky where you can count the visible stars on two hands, the landmarks simply are not there. A GoTo mount does not care.

Tracking is the second benefit and an underrated one. At high magnification on a manual mount, Jupiter crosses the eyepiece in seconds. A tracking mount holds it still, which is what makes long, patient looks at fine planetary detail possible — and it is a prerequisite for any serious imaging.

  • You want to see a lot of objects in a session, or run sessions for family and students
  • You intend to try astrophotography later

Look elsewhere if

  • Your budget is tight — the electronics eat money that could have bought aperture
  • You genuinely want to learn the constellations and find objects yourself
  • You observe somewhere without reliable power for the mount

The trade-off: you are paying for motors, not mirrors

At any given price, a GoTo telescope has a smaller aperture than a manual one, because a meaningful share of the cost went into the mount, the encoders and the hand controller. There is also a setup tax — alignment takes a few minutes at the start of every session, and a poor alignment sends the mount to the wrong patch of sky. Decide honestly whether you are limited by finding objects or by seeing them; only the first problem is one GoTo solves.
