Reflector Telescopes — The Most Aperture Per Rupee

A Newtonian reflector uses a curved primary mirror at the base of the tube to collect light and a small flat secondary to bounce it out to the eyepiece. Mirrors are far cheaper to make than lenses of equal size, which is why reflectors dominate every conversation about value in amateur astronomy.

Aperture is the single specification that determines what you can see, and reflectors give you more of it per rupee than any other design. That difference is not marginal: doubling aperture quadruples light-gathering area. It is the reason experienced observers who chase galaxies and nebulae almost always end up behind a mirror.

The price you pay is a little upkeep. The mirrors sit in an open tube, they need occasional realignment, and the tube itself needs time to cool to the outside air before the view settles. None of it is difficult — collimation takes a few minutes once you have done it twice.

The trade-off: collimation and cooldown

Two chores come with the aperture. Collimation is aligning the mirrors, needed occasionally and after rough transport — a collimation cap and ten minutes handles it. Cooldown is thermal: a warm mirror creates air currents inside the tube that blur the image, so a reflector brought straight from an air-conditioned room performs poorly for the first half hour. Neither is a reason to avoid the design, but both are reasons to know what you are buying.
