Deep-sky objects are faint and often large. Unlike planets, there is no magnification trick that helps — you cannot amplify light that the telescope never collected. Aperture is the specification that decides what you will see, and there is no substitute for it.
A 130mm telescope shows the Andromeda Galaxy as an oval glow. A 200mm from the same site starts to show its dust lane. The Hercules Cluster is a fuzzy ball at 100mm, a granular sphere at 150mm, and resolves into individual suns across the core at 200mm. These are not incremental differences; they are different experiences of the same object.
The second factor is entirely free and entirely outside our control: your sky. A 150mm telescope under a genuinely dark rural sky will comfortably outperform a 250mm from a city rooftop. If you can drive an hour out of town a few times a year, that trip will do more for your deep-sky observing than any upgrade you can buy.

Buying aperture to beat light pollution is the most expensive way to solve that problem, and it works poorly. Skyglow raises the background brightness the object has to compete against, so a bigger mirror brightens the object and the glow together. Before upgrading aperture for deep-sky work, be honest about whether a two-hour drive would buy you more than the money would.
